The Windows HEIC problem
Copy iPhone photos to a Windows PC and you'll find them unopenable. Windows 10/11 needs the HEIF Image Extensions — historically paid, now free but still an install — plus a paid HEVC codec for many files. Most guides send you down a rabbit hole of Store links and codecs.
The shortcut: skip the codecs entirely. This page decodes HEIC with WebAssembly in your browser, so Windows itself never needs to understand the format. Works in Edge, Chrome and Firefox on Windows 7 through 11 — and on Mac and Linux too.
